Important Information for Patients on HRT or Contraceptive Pills & Taking Injectable Weight-loss Medications

HRT

If you are taking HRT and some or all of it is in a tablet form, please note:

Weight loss injections (Mounjaro, Ozempic, Wegovy, Rybelsus, Trulicity and others) may reduce the absorption of your medication, especially when:

• Starting the injection

• Increasing the dose

This could lead to unexpected bleeding or thickening of the womb lining.

To stay safe, you may need a higher dose of progesterone for 4 weeks after starting or increasing injections.

Oral Contraceptives

If you are on the contraceptive pill, these injections may also affect its effectiveness and there is a risk of pregnancy.

It’s recommended to use an additional barrier method (e.g. condoms) for 4 weeks after starting or changing your dose.

We’re currently reviewing and advising patients who may be affected. However, we aren’t always notified if patients are accessing weight-loss injections privately or online. The prescribing clinician should appropriately counsel you about this, but it is important that you discuss your HRT or contraception with them directly.

If you have abnormal bleeding after the menopause then please book an urgent GP appointment.

If you think you need an increased dose of HRT, please pause your injectable medication and discuss this routinely with your GP.
