First Contact Physiotherapy

First Contact Physiotherapists (FCPs) are advanced practitioners working within primary care with extensive expertise in the clinical assessment, diagnosis and management of musculoskeletal (MSK) conditions. FCPs see patients with (suspected or diagnosed) MSK conditions as the first point of contact, instead of a GP, and can be accessed directly by contacting the practice’s reception.

Act FAST - advice for Stroke

Face – has their face fallen on one side? Can they smile?

Arms – can they raise both arms and keep them there?

Speech – is their speech slurred?

Time to call 999 if you see any one of these signs

Other stroke symptoms people should be aware of include:

  • Sudden loss of vision or blurred vision in one or both eyes
  • Sudden weakness or numbness on one side of the body
  • Sudden memory loss or confusion
  • Sudden dizziness, unsteadiness or a sudden fall, especially with any of the other symptoms

Stroke is a medical emergency. The public is being urged to take the above symptoms seriously and call 999 without delay if they notice any one of them in themselves or others, even if you are unsure.

Little Blue Book of Sunshine

Teenagers across Berkshire West are getting help and tips on dealing with mental health problems from a ‘Little Blue Book of Sunshine’.

The book, which has been commissioned by the Berkshire West Clinical Commissioning Groups, has been delivered to every secondary school in Reading, Wokingham and West Berkshire for pupils aged 14 and above to keep and refer to whenever they are feeling blue.

Personality Disorder Training across the Thames Valley

Please find information attached about an offer for free general practice based personality disorder training across the Thames Valley. The training aims to improve the practice team’s confidence when working with patients with complex emotional issues and is for all staff; clinical, managerial, administrative and reception.

Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service: People At Risk, fire safety training

Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service is holding free training for partner agencies. This training is a fire safety guide for all those involved in the care of adults in the community. It lays down the minimum recommendations for the protection of adults at risk from fire.

It is recognised that there are many considerations to be taken into account when planning a care package to allow someone to continue to live in the community with extra support to ensure their safety and wellbeing.

The dates are: 10am on 23 September and 2pm on 26 September for 1.5 hours. The training will be held the Council Chamber, West Berkshire Council, Newbury.

Lift the Baby video: New campaign launched to raise awareness of safe sleeping with babies

Players from London Irish Rugby Club have teamed up with health chiefs to launch a major video campaign aimed at cutting baby deaths. The video is the result of a year long piece of work pioneered by Berkshire West and East Berkshire CCGs and a range of health partners. Research showed that the bulk of information and support offered to new parents was aimed primarily at mothers, so the health teams wanted to develop something to reach out to new dads. Please keep an eye open for tweets about #LiftTheBaby and retweet and share as widely as possible.
