Meningitis outbreak

We understand many patients are concerned about the current MenB outbreak.

At present, there is no need for antibiotics unless you are a confirmed close contact of a MenB case. In those situations, public health teams will contact you directly and arrange any necessary treatment.

There is also no current indication for MenB vaccination.

MenB vaccination is part of the routine NHS childhood schedule for children born after 1 May 2015. Some older patients may have received it if they are in higher-risk medical groups (e.g. certain immune or spleen conditions) or if they chose to have it privately.

Please note that there is no NHS service providing MenB vaccination outside the routine childhood programme, so we are unable to offer this on request. If you are considering private vaccination, please seek information independently.

You may still be eligible for the MenACWY vaccine up to age 25 if you have not already had it- please contact reception to book.
